PHICEN Nina Armoury Post 1

If I didn't make it quite clear in my review, I looooove this 1/6 Nina fig, but if there is one department she lacks in, it's weaponry.  Her Glocks are cool, but Nina Williams is a master assassin, a spy, a saboteur, possibly a catwalk model AND a ninja all at once, so she knows a few more ways to kill folk than just through the John Woo school of twin-pistol dove-exploding gun-kata.  Hence this post, first in what will probably be a series*, showing off Nina waving around other various implements of pain.

Oh, and before we start, if you don't check my Twitter feed regularly (what is wrong with you):

I think we can agree that all versions of Nina need a superfluous tiny dagger that never ever gets used strapped to one thigh, right?  And yeah, I kinda wish I could attach it further down her leg, but the top needs to hook onto the belt to stay in place.  Anyhoo, click through for more pics.

* - it'll run until I can't find more weapons to steal off my other figures...which doesn't look likely to happen soon.

The box was annoyingly non-specific about what kind of rifle this is - I think the game terms it a PSG-1 but the Resi games don't always get this stuff right (look at all the gun names in 4 - 'Blacktail', 'Red9' etc).  Sniper rifles are probably second only to knives as far as Nina-centric weapons go, but I've yet to find a 1/6 figure that can hold a weapon this size the way it should be held.  Nina does it better than most, but her neck's a bit too stubborn to make it seem like she's looking through the sights.

by Sideshow Collectibles

This one's apparently a VSS sniper rifle, but I'm buggered if that's the specific model or just the name of the manufacturer.  I really like the look of this gun, but I don't think it photographs well; the flash makes the camo paint on the barrel seem gaudy.

MP5 Submachine Gun

This is a pretty neat take on a well-known SMG, and features a movable fire-select switch and telescoping stock in addition to the expected removable magazine.  That said, the MP5 is a bit too commonplace for a specialist like Nina; it's a policeman's gun and so lacks a certain flair.

Bigger, Meaner Knife
Sourced from Videogame Masterpiece Albert Wesker (S.T.A.R.S. version)
by Hot Toys

Again, Hot Toys just couldn't be bothered naming any of the accessories on the box, so if this is meant to be a specific kind of knife, I've no clue as to what.  The majority of the blade is painted black, save for the edge, which I really like, and it's got some serious heft to it.  I did, however, have to use some blu-tack to keep it in place, as the handle wasn't as thick as I'd have hoped.

Cosmic Luger and Tesseract Cube

by Hot Toys

Yeah, I just totally pulled 'cosmic Luger' out of my arse here.  But, as you'll know if you saw the Captain America movie, Red Skull's pistol (like all HYDRA weapons) is powered by energy from the Tesseract, which is the Cosmic Cube in the comics, and the gun still kinda looks like a Luger, albeit one handmade from stuff scrounged out of a RadioShack.  And what does Nina want with the Cube?  Well, since it basically (in the comics, at least) allows the wielder to reshape reality according to their desires, she's probably debating whether or not to 'wish' Anna out of existence...

Fnar har har.  This particular bit of nastiness comes in both short and long forms (each with a slightly different head to boot) and I'm kinda impressed with how good they look in Nina's hands, given how incredibly alien the styling is.  Not to mention I'm a sucker for a pikestaff or halberd-type weapon and this is the closest thing I've been able to get my mitts on thus far.

'Magpul' Masada Rifle
Sourced from 1/6 G.I. Joe Cobra Viper
by Sideshow Collectibles

Sideshow in general are a lot better at naming the stuff their toys come with.  The Masada (Magpul is the manufacturer), also known as the Bushmaster, is a US-made adaptive combat rifle that went into production around 2009; this particular version features a few extras on the basic frame, namely a foregrip, under-barrel flashlight, muzzle suppressor and a hybrid sight.  The stock can also fold up along the side of the gun.  I've got a few other assault rifles in the collection but this is my favourite; there's something inherently cool in the thick, blocky bodywork - it just looks meaner than the relatively skeletal M4.

More in the near future, I hope.  Also remember, if any of these things catch your eye, there's plenty of reliable eBay stockists that let you purchase single-packed 1/6 accessories for okay-ish prices - which is a hell of a lot better than stumping up for the hefty pricetags attached to full boxed figures, natch.

  1. Damn, beautiful posing!
I don't really have much/any experience with 1:6 figures. Is that a base I see you use in some of the shots?
Was it difficult to make her pull off these poses? You make it look so effortlessly.
Great shots, really! That last shot with the Masada is spectacular!
What is it with us boys and our weapons?
I now feel like I need to buy a second one, so I can have one figure still sealed in her box and one figure to pose.
I wouldn't really be able to put her anywhere in my apartment since she would clash horribly with the interieur, but pulling off some of these poses is quite tempting.

    1. I used a stand for the 2nd pic with the sceptre - that's the clear plastic thing sticking up at the side - since Nina's legs were pretty far apart and I couldn't quite get both her feet to lay flat (and she might've overbalanced even if I had). The stand in question is a generic type I got with a Medicom Real Action Heroes fig, and is designed to clip around one of the figure's legs; it's not the best kind of stand, but since all my other ones are black and have names/logos on them, it's the most discreet.

(The thing Nina seems to be propping one foot on in the sniper pics is a 3DS game box I had laying around...I don't know why)

As I said in the review, the ratcheted joints kinda scare me, but perhaps because I've been using them so much already, most of the major ones aren't nearly so stiff anymore so I've gotten a lot braver with what poses I can get Nina into. The mid-torso joint is still a scary thing but the arms and legs are manageable.
